Halloween is an annual celebration, but just what is it actually a celebration of? And how did this peculiar custom originate? Is it, as some claim, a kind of demon worship? Or is it just a harmless vestige of some ancient pagan ritual?

The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.

One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living.

Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess.

Probably a better explanation of why the Celts extinguished their fires was not to discourage spirit possession, but so that all the Celtic tribes could relight their fires from a common source, the Druidic fire that was kept burning in the Middle of Ireland, at Usinach.

Some accounts tell of how the Celts would burn someone at the stake who was thought to have already been possessed, as sort of a lesson to the spirits. Other accounts of Celtic history debunk these stories as myth.

The Romans adopted the Celtic practices as their own. But in the first century AD, Samhain was assimilated into celebrations of some of the other Roman traditions that took place in October, such as their day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple, which might explain the origin of our modern tradition of bobbing for apples on Halloween.

The thrust of the practices also changed over time to become more ritualized. As belief in spirit possession waned, the practice of dressing up like hobgoblins, ghosts, and witches took on a more ceremonial role.

The custom of Halloween was brought to America in the 1840's by Irish immigrants fleeing their country's potato famine. At that time, the favorite pranks in New England included tipping over outhouses and unhinging fence gates.

The custom of trick-or-treating is thought to have originated not with the Irish Celts, but with a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes," made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul's passage to heaven.

The Jack-o-lantern custom probably comes from Irish folklore. As the tale is told, a man named Jack, who was notorious as a drunkard and trickster, tricked Satan into climbing a tree. Jack then carved an image of a cross in the tree's trunk, trapping the devil up the tree. Jack made a deal with the devil that, if he would never tempt him again, he would promise to let him down the tree.

According to the folk tale, after Jack died, he was denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways, but he was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked the devil. Instead, the devil gave him a single ember to light his way through the frigid darkness. The ember was placed inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing longer.

The Irish used turnips as their "Jack's lanterns" originally. But when the immigrants came to America, they found that pumpkins were far more plentiful than turnips. So the Jack-O-Lantern in America was a hollowed-out pumpkin, lit with an ember.

So, although some cults may have adopted Halloween as their favorite "holiday," the day itself did not grow out of evil practices. It grew out of the rituals of Celts celebrating a new year, and out of Medieval prayer rituals of Europeans. And today, even many churches have Halloween parties or pumpkin carving events for the kids. After all, the day itself is only as evil as one cares to make it.

Kiarostami began his directing career when he founded the film department of the Kanun Centre for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults, based in the Iranian capital Tehran. His output was impressive and he quickly became one of the most prominent figures in the country’s cinema. In 1997 he was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival for his film A Taste of Cherry, and in 1999 he won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival for The Wind Will Carry Us.

I think Iran played well. They gave it their all, in spite of being a group of young players making their first FIFA World Cup appearance. The first half was great.

They are setting a fantastic example for Iranian youth, whose eyes are glued to their performances and who are hoping that this time they will make progress in the tournament.

I loved watching the painted faces of the Mexican fans, and their dancing. That side of football is really special! However, we mustn’t get carried away; we’ll have to see how things go against Angola and Portugal. Portugal could be tough, but I hope that we’ll beat Angola at least. I would love it if Iran made it to the Round of 16; we need something to cheer about.

انسان‏، از نخستین سال های زندگی اجتماعی، متوجه بازگشت و تكرار برخی از رویدادهای طبیعی، یعنی تكرار فصول شد. نیاز به محاسبه در دوران كشاورزی ، یعنی نیاز به دانستن زمان كاشت و برداشت، فصل بندی ها و تقویم دهقانی و زراعی را به وجود آورد. نخستین محاسبه فصل ها، بی گمان در همه جوامع با گردش ماه كه تغییرآن آسانتر دیده می شد صورت گرفت. و بالاخره در نتیجه نارسایی ها و ناهماهنگی هایی كه تقویم قمری، با تقویم دهقانی داشت، محاسبه و تنظیم تقویم بر اساس گردش خورشید صورت پذیرفت. سال در نزد ایرانیان از زمانی نسبتا كهن به چهار فصل سه ماهه تقسیم گردیده است و همان طور كه ابوریحان بیرونی در آثارالباقیه آورده است آغاز سال ایرانی از زمان خلقت انسان ( یعنی ابتدای هزاره هفتم از تاریخ عالم) روز هرمز از ماه فروردین بود، وقتی كه آفتاب در نصف النهار ، درنقطه اعتدال ربیعی ، و طالع سرطان بود.

پیدایش جشن نوروز جشن نوروز را به نخستین پادشاهان نسبت می دهند. شاعران و نویسندگان قرن چهارم و پنجم هجری چون فردوسی، عنصری، بیرونی، طبری و بسیاری دیگر كه منبع تاریخی و اسطوره ای آنان بی گمان ادبیات پیش از اسلام بوده ، نوروز را از زمان پادشاهی جمشید می دانند. در خور یادآوری است كه جشن نوروز پیش از جمشید نیز برگزار می شده و ابوریحان نیز با آنكه جشن را به جمشید منسوب می كند یادآور می شود كه : «آن روز كه روز تازه ای بود جمشید عید گرفت؛ اگر چه پیش از آن هم نوروز بزرگ و معظم بود». روایتهای اسلامی درباره نوروز آورده اند كه در زمان حضرت رسول (ص) در نوروز جامی سیمین كه پر از حلوا بود برای پیغمبر هدیه آوردند و آن حضرت پرسید كه این چیست؟ گفتند كه امروز نوروز است. پرسید كه نوروز چیست؟ گفتند عید بزرگ ایرانیان. فرمود: آری، در این روز بود كه خداوند عسكره را زنده كرد. پرسیدند عسكره چیست؟ فرمود عسكره هزاران مردمی بودند كه از ترس مرگ ترك دیار كرده و سر به بیابان نهادند و خداوند به آنان گفت بمیرید و مردند. سپس آنان را زنده كرد وابرها را فرمود كه به آنان ببارند از این روست كه پاشیدن آب در این روز رسم شده. سپس از آن حلوا تناول كرد و جام را میان اصحاب خود قسمت كرده و گفت كاش هر روزی بر ما نوروز بود. و نیز حدیثی است از معلی بن خنیس كه گفت: روز نوروز بر حضرت جعفر بن محمد صادق در آمدم گفت آیا این روز را می شناسی؟ گفتم این روزی است كه ایرانیان آن را بزرگ می دارند و به یكدیگر هدیه می دهند. پس حضرت صادق گفت سوگند به خداوند كه این بزرگداشت نوروز به علت امری كهن است كه برایت بازگو می كنم تا آن را دریابی. پس گفت: ای معلی ، روز نوروز روزی است كه خداوند از بندگان خود پیمان گرفت كه او را بپرستند و او را شریك و انبازی نگیرند و به پیامبران و راهنمایان او بگروند. همان روزی است كه آفتاب در آن طلوع كرد و بادها وزیدن گرفت وزمین در آن شكوفا و درخشان شد. همان روزی است كه كشتی نوح در كوه آرام گرفت. همان روزی است كه پیامبر خدا، امیر المومنین علی (ع) را بر دوش خود گرفت تا بتهای قریش را از كعبه به زیر افكند. چنان كه ابراهیم نیز این كار را كرد. همان روزی است كه خداوند به یاران خود فرمود تا با علی (ع) به عنوان امیر المومنین بیعت كنند. همان روزی است كه قائم آل محمد (ص) و اولیای امردر آن ظهور می كنند و همان روزی است كه قائم بر دجال پیروز می شود و او را در كنار كوفه بر دار می كشد و هیچ نوروزی نیست كه ما در آن متوقع گشایش و فرجی نباشیم، زیرا نوروز از روزهای ما و شیعیان ماست.
	جشن نوروز جشن نوروز دست كم یك یا دو هفته ادامه دارد. ابوریحان بیرونی مدت برگزاری جشن نوروز را پس از جمشید یك ماه می نویسد: « چون جم درگذشت پادشاهان همه روزهای این ماه را عید گرفتند. عیدها را شش بخش نمودند: 5 روز نخست را به پادشاهان اختصاص دادند، 5 روز دوم را به اشراف، 5 روز سوم را به خادمان و كاركنان پادشاهی، 5 روز چهارم را به ندیمان و درباریان ، 5 روز پنجم را به توده مردم و پنجه ششم را به برزگران. ولی برگزاری مراسم نوروزی امروز، دست كم از پنجه و «چهارشنبه آخر سال» آغاز و در «سیزده بدر»‌ پایان می پذیرد. ازآداب و رسوم كهن پیش از نوروز باید از پنجه، چهارشنبه سوری و خانه تكانی یاد كرد. پنجه (خمسه مسترقه) بنابر سال نمای كهن ایران هر یك از 12 ماه سال 30 روز است و پنج روز باقیمانده سال را پنجه، پنجك، یا خمسه مسترقه، گویند. این پنج روز را خمسه مسترقه نامند از آن جهت كه در هیچ یك از ماهها حساب نمی شود. مراسم پنجه تا سال 1304، كه تقویم رسمی شش ماه اول سال را سی و یك روز قرارداد، برگزار می شد. میر نوروزی از جمله آیین های این جشن 5 روزه، كه در شمار روزهای سال و ماه و كار نبود، برای شوخی و سرگرمی حاكم و امیری انتخاب می كردند كه رفتار و دستورهایش خنده آور بود و در پایان جشن از ترس آزار مردمان فرار می كرد. ابوریحان از مردی بی ریش یاد می كند كه با جامه و آرایشی شگفت انگیز و خنده آور در نخستین روز بهار مردم را سرگرم می كرد و چیزی می گرفت. و هم اوست كه حافظ به عنوان « میر نوروزی» دوران حكومتش را « بیش از 5 روز» نمی داند. از برگزاری رسم میر نوروزی، تا 73 سال پیش آگاهی داریم. بی گمان كسانی را كه در روزهای نخست فروردین، با لباس های قرمز رنگ و صورت سیاه شده در كوچه و گذر وخیابان می بینیم كه با دایره زدن و خواندن و رقصیدن مردم را سرگرم می كنند و پولی می گیرند بازمانده شوخی ها و سرگرمی  های انتخاب «میر نوروزی» و «حاكم پنج روزه » است كه تنها در روزهای جشن نوروزی دیده می شوند و آنان در شعرهای خود می گویند: «حاجی فیروزه، عید نوروزه، سالی چند روزه». سوتیترها روز نوروز روزی است كه خداوند از بندگان خود پیمان گرفت كه او را بپرستند و او را شریك و انبازی نگیرند و به پیامبران و راهنمایان او بگروند.
