1) Encyclopaedia Britannica  :Thirty pages of information provide an excellent overview, giving an history of LINGUISTICS, basic information on the various fields and schools as well as relations with other disciplines. Good basic bibliography.

2)Crystal, David, ed. The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1987. Excellent - divided into 11 parts, 65 thematic sections. Three indexes provide access by Language, Families, Dialects, Scripts, Authors, Topics and Personalities. Illustrations, maps and glossary included.

3)Crystal, David. A Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics. Oxford: Blackwell, 1991. Directed to undergrads - includes terms influenced by 20th century linguists.

4)Asher, R.E. The Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics. Oxford: Pergamon Press, 1994.10 volumes. Authoritative, comprehensive and international in approach. Includes excellent bibliography, glossary of terms, languages of the world, Phonetic Alphabet. Author and subject indexes provided.
